Top Trailing Plants For Your Home Garden

Enhance your garden with these top trailing plants: English Ivy, Spider Plant, Green Fern, Philodendron, String of Bananas, String of Dolphins, String of Pearls, Bird’s Nest Fern, Staghorn Fern, and Peperomia. Each offers unique beauty and easy care.

1. English Ivy

English Ivy

English Ivy is a type of trailing plants that thrives well in moderate conditions. Neither does it like cold winter wind nor can it survive high summer heat. Its leaves will stay dark green as long as it is grown in steady temperatures with moderate to high humidity. It performs well grown outdoors in full sun to full shade. Ivy is a great choice to grow in water. The plants are vigorous and thrive in a vase or jar of water.

2. Spider plant

Spider Plant

Spider plant are known to bring good luck and prosperity in your homes. While growing in your garden, make sure to provide them well drained soil and indirect sunlight so that they can flourish properly. They also need some drying out in between watering.

3. Green Fern

Green Fern

For success in how to grow ferns, select a spot with light or dappled shade, as few will tolerate full exposure to the sun, and one that is sheltered from strong winds. Overhead protection from a canopy of trees or being placed by shrubs will increase the humidity, which helps them thrive.

4. Philodendron

Philodendron

Another super easy houseplant to grow, the philodendron doesn’t mind lower light levels and will bounce back easily if you occasionally forget to water it. Philodendrons grow best in high-humidity, but tolerate the low-humidity of homes, especially in winter, quite well. Indoors, set them up by a window that gets bright, indirect light.

5. String of Bananas

String of Bananas: trailing plants

These trailing succulents require bright, direct light when grown indoors. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight throughout the day. String of bananas do well under grow lights as well if needed. Keep misting every few days when you feel the ground is dry, and once rooted, you can switch over to watering.

6. String of Dolphins

String of Dolphins: trailing plants

String of dolphins does best when it receives at least six hours of sunlight a day. A south-facing window is ideal, but it can adapt to medium light when grown indoors as well. Your succulent String of Dolphins needs to be watered no more than once or twice a week during the hot season, even if the plant is drought-tolerant. When the weather is colder, ensure that you water the plant only once or twice every month.

7. String of Pearls

String of Pearls: trailing plants

String of Pearls plants enjoy bright, indirect light. It will tolerate temperatures as low as 10°C in but to encourage flowers in spring, keep it at a temperature of between 13-16°C in winter. They are very sensitive to overwatering, so make sure that you give them just enough water. Recommended amount is once every two weeks.

8. Bird’s Nest Fern

Leathery fronds with wavy edges radiate from the center of the plant to create a striking vase shape that vaguely resembles a nest. Because these ferns love high humidity, they are great plants to grow in your bathroom, if you have a window providing plenty of indirect light.

9. Staghorn Fern

Staghorn fern: trailing plants

Staghorns are epiphytes, which means that in nature they grow on other plants (but they aren’t parasites on the host plant). So they don’t need to grow in a pot of soil like other plants do. Instead, use them as statement-making displays, like mounted on boards hung on the wall. Water them like you would air plants, by misting them every day or soaking them in water weekly.

10. Peperomia

Peperomia: trailing plants

Sometimes called a baby rubber plant, peperomia is an easy houseplant for beginners to grow. Like most common houseplants, Peperomia plants prefer an average indoor temperature of 65°F to 75°F. These plants need medium to bright light to maintain their vibrant foliage colors. The main thing to watch out for is strict attention to soil moisture. These plants are not drought tolerant.
