Description
Vermiculite is a naturally arising mineral that takes the form of glossy flakes, varying in color from dark gray to sandy brown. These flakes, which are more precisely a hydrated magnesium iron aluminum silicate mineral, get heated up in a purpose-built commercial furnace, where they then enhance and take on a concertina form, almost like a small accordion. Also, check out our workshops for more details.
MADE OF
Vermiculite is made from compressed dry flakes of a silicate material that is absorptive and spongy.
HOW TO USE
- Use 1/3 to 1/2 vermiculite in your potting soil for containers or when building your raised beds, or improve your garden soil by adding it in the spring with your other soil amendments and compost.
- For new lawns, spread a 1/4 inch layer evenly around the planted area just after you seed it, then irrigate well. The vermiculite will help hold moisture near the seeds to improve germination.
BENEFITS
Vermiculite has qualities that make it useful for propagation and for potting up plants that do best in moist compost, including indoor plants. Utilizing vermiculite as a developing medium will also stimulate the plant to easily soak up the ammonium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium necessary for robust growth.
- It is lightweight, a property that is especially important for potted plants.
- It is highly absorbent. Its particles absorb and retain water and nutrients and make them available to the plants whenever they need them.
- It has a neutral soil pH, so gardeners don’t have to be concerned about altering the soil acidity by adding vermiculite.
