Benefits Of Organic Gardening For A Sustainable Future

Organic farming plays a crucial role in promoting environmental sustainability by improving soil health, conserving water, and reducing harmful chemical usage. It focuses on enhancing ecosystems rather than exploiting them, making it a viable approach for a greener future. Organic agriculture is an efficient and promising agricultural approach for environmental sustainability as it provides yield stability, improves soil health and has a lot other benefits. It relies on managing the ecosystem rather than depleting it.

Restricts the use

For farming to be organic, harmful chemicals and pesticides are a no-go. Therefore, organic farmers don’t rely on harmful pesticides or chemicals to control pests. Instead, they aim to control pests through more natural methods like cover crops, composting, and crop rotation.

Maintains healthy soil

healthy soilPesticides and chemicals tend to contaminate the soil; obviously, the produce from this contaminated soil cannot be healthy. Organic farmers choose to use natural preventative fertilizers on their soils before they plant crops. One of the primary ways they maintain healthy soil is by using compost, which contains many helpful bacteria that build up the ground.

Limits soil erosion

soil erosionSince organic farming builds healthy and strong soil, erosion naturally diminishes. When the soil is teeming with biodiversity and strengthened bonds, erosion has no chance. Erosion affects more than just the soil. When soil is swept away, the land is affected, and human food sources decrease.

Provides cleaner water

Organic farming helps keep the water supply safe and clean because it doesn’t use harmful chemicals. One of the primary sources of water pollution comes from agricultural soils when water runs off into rivers and streams. Organic farmers mulch and amend soils to prevent runoff, which in turn conserves water. Additionally, they watch their water usage for irrigation.

Reduces non- renewable energy use

non- renewable energyNon-organic farming practices add up to climate change. The fertilizers used directly put off emissions, the equipment to plant and harvest crops rely on fossil fuels, and agricultural animals eat food that contributes to climate change. In organic agriculture, non-renewable energy sources are highly regulated. Moreover, it slows climate change by reducing carbon emissions.

Stimulates biodiversity

With more biodiversity, the farm is more stable and can ward off invasive species. A mixture of plants, animals and microorganisms promotes soil and animal health as well. This is because they can work together to prevent disease and erosion, which eradicates the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

Preserves animal health and welfare

Organic farming helps keep the natural habitat, thus encouraging animals to live happily on the farmlands. Additionally, animals living on organic farms are exposed to clean, chemical-free grazing that keeps them naturally healthy and resistant to illness.

Discourages algal blooms

algal bloomsAlgal blooms result in adverse effects on people’s health and marine animals & organisms.  One of the primary reasons that contribute to the growth of algal blooms (that are human-based) is the runoff from petroleum-based fertilizers that are often used in conventional farming. By relying on organic agriculture, the growth of algal blooms can be thus heavily reduced.

Fights against global warming

As discussed above non- organic farming results in climate changes which directly leads to global warming. A healthy organic agricultural system can reduce carbon dioxide levels in the air and aid in slowing down climate change, thereby, reducing global warming.

Contributes to societal health

The degradation of soil and subsequent collapse of food production has been cited as one of the contributing reasons for the decline of civilizations. It is important that we strengthen these ecosystems so that in addition to improving water quality and protecting soils, we also use them to combat climate change, provide nutritious food and enable them to continue to do so for coming generations.
