5 Best Vegetables To Grow In August

5 Best Vegetables To Grow In August

The specific vegetables that are best to grow in August can depend on your climate and growing zone. However, here are five vegetable plants that typically do well in many areas during August:

1. Beans

Bush and pole beans are both excellent choices for August planting. Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil. Plant the seeds about 1 inch deep and 3-4 inches apart for bush beans, or plant pole beans at the base of a support structure. Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Fertilize every few weeks with a balanced fertilizer.

2. Bell Peppers

August is a great time to plant peppers, as they need plenty of heat and sun to thrive. Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil. Plant the seedlings about 18-24 inches apart. Water them regularly, but avoid over-watering them. Fertilize every few weeks with a balanced fertilizer.

3. Sweet potatoes

Sweet potatoes are a great choice for August planting. Choose a sunny location with fertile, well-draining soil. Plant slips (small rooted cuttings) about 12 inches apart. Water regularly, but avoid over-watering. Fertilize every few weeks with a balanced fertilizer. As the plants grow, mound soil up around the base of the stem to encourage the formation of more sweet potatoes.

4. Squash

Squash plants need full sun, fertile soil, and consistent moisture. Plant the seeds or seedlings in hills or mounds, spacing them several feet apart. Provide support for vining varieties and protect the plants from squash bugs and other pests. Harvest squash when they are fully mature but before the skin hardens.

5. Eggplant

Eggplants require full sun and fertile, well-draining soil. Plant the seedlings or seeds in a spot with good air circulation and space them about two feet apart. Water consistently, but avoid getting water on the leaves. Fertilize every few weeks and harvest the eggplants when they are firm and shiny.
