5 Best Pet-Friendly Plants To Buy In The Winter

Plants and pets bring you closer to nature. They are the ultimate stress busters as they make your home cheerful and lively and send out good vibes. However, not all plants are suitable for homes with pets.

Pets tend to nibble on house plants out of sheer curiosity or as a natural instinct. Some of these plants can be toxic or harmful to your pets. Therefore, it is important to do thorough research before selecting plants for homes with pets.

In this blog post, we will share with you five of the best pet-friendly plants that you can buy in winter:

Spider plant

Spider plant looks beautiful with long and slender leaves that come in both variegated and green varieties. Its arching leaves look like spider legs making it ideal for shelves and hanging baskets. It has long and slender stems that produce baby plants called pups that you can propagate to multiply your plant.

It is an easy-to-care plant that can do well even in low light and cold and dry winter conditions. It is non-toxic to cats and dogs, and some pets even like to nibble on them.

Christmas cactus

The Christmas Cactus is a stunning succulent with thick green leaves. It looks like a cactus because of the serrations on the edges of its leaves. It gives out pink blooms from November to January, making it an excellent indoor plant for winter. It requires bright indirect sunlight and watering once in 3 to 4 weeks. It is non-toxic and safe for pets.

Sweetheart hoya

Sweetheart Hoya also known as the Hoya Kerrii or wax plant is a beautiful succulent with thick heart-shaped leaves. It can easily adjust to low light conditions and requires minimal watering, only twice a month during winter. However, it needs humid conditions and, therefore, needs to be misted frequently. It also produces beautiful pinkish-white fragrant flowers in spring. It is safe for pets as well.

Parlor palm

The Parlor Palm can add a tropical touch to any space with its feathery fronds. It can do well indoors in living rooms and parlors giving it its name. It can tolerate low to medium light and low temperatures. It is sensitive to over-watering and, therefore, needs to be watered only when the top inch of the soil feels dry. It is also an air purifier and is non-toxic to pets.

Watermelon peperomia

This cute Watermelon Peperomia plant has thick, glossy leaves with patterns on them that look like watermelons. It requires bright indirect sunlight. It can store water in its leaves just like succulents, therefore, it doesn’t need much watering or humidity. It is also safe for pets, as it is non-toxic and is bitter to taste, thus discouraging the pets from eating it.
