How to grow capsicum seeds/ plants in India?

Capsicums, also known as Bell Pepper or Shimla Mirch, are easy to grow and don’t require any special care. Capsicum seeds grow in different shapes and colors adding flavor to salads, soups, and dishes. So, here’s a simple guide for growing capsicum seeds at home.

Steps to germinate capsicum seeds:

1. Take a seedling tray and fill it with coco peat.
2. Make a 0.5 inches deep hole and put 2-3 seeds in the hole (make a hole in the center and place the seeds).
3. Fill the hole with coco peat and spray some water. 
4. Transplant them in soil or in large or medium containers, when the seeds grow 4-6 leaves.
5. Plant the seedlings 12-24inches apart in a row.
6. Make sure that the soil is warm.

Water requirements: 

Water 3-4 times a week. (In winter alternatively and summer every day).

Soil type: 

• Capsicum seeds grow best in soil pH ranging from 6.2-7.0. 
• It needs light and the fertile soil which improves the aeration.
• If growing in the soil make a drainage system. But if using planters or pots make sure that it has a hole in it for excess water flow.

Manures:

• Use a good potting mix in medium-size (or late size) containers.
• If growing in the soil make sure to add VermiCompost, cow dung, seaweed fertilizer, and a layer of coco peat.
• Provide mulch around the plant. 
• Tea compost and vegetable peels can also be used.

Seed germination time:

• Seeds will germinate in 6-15 days. 
• For some seeds, it may take 21days to sprout.
• Some varieties can take 4-5 weeks for germination. As it depends on the variety, temperature, soil, and sunlight.

Temperature range to grow: 

20-30 degree C 

Sunlight needed: 

Partial sunlight (3-4 hours will be enough). Keep them in the shady areas.

Time to flower/fruit: 

10-12 weeks.
